The PJM Learning Center is the education site of PJM Interconnection, the grid operator that keeps the lights on for about 20 percent of the U.S. It is written for non-specialists and starts with Electricity Basics, an introduction to electricity, the grid and the industry around it.
From there it covers who PJM is, how its membership-driven stakeholder process and governance work, and its three priorities: keeping the lights on, running the wholesale electricity markets where energy is bought and sold, and planning for the grid’s future needs. It also explains how PJM forecasts load, and its video A Day in the Life of Dispatch shows how supply and demand are balanced across a footprint serving 65 million people.
How it gets used on a real project
Projects in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland all sit inside PJM, so sooner or later you need to understand how it works. The Learning Center is the gentle on-ramp: read it before a first conversation about capacity, wholesale prices or interconnection, and the terms in the room will make sense.
