NFPA 855: Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems

NFPA 855 is the National Fire Protection Association’s Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems. NFPA describes it as setting the minimum requirements for mitigating the hazards associated with energy storage systems (ESS). The current edition is 2026, and NFPA’s page also tracks the next edition and the technical committee responsible for it.

In practice it addresses how stationary battery and other storage systems are installed so that fire and related hazards are managed. Topics include where systems can be located and how they are separated, fire and explosion protection, and commissioning and emergency planning. The full text is sold by NFPA and is also available through its NFPA LiNK platform.

How it gets used on a real project

If a project adds battery storage, the fire marshal or other local reviewer will usually look at it against NFPA 855 or a fire code that draws on it. Siting, spacing and emergency response questions tend to come up at permitting, so knowing the standard early keeps a layout from being redrawn later. Check which edition your jurisdiction uses, because local adoption often lags the current one.
