SunSpec Alliance

The SunSpec Alliance is a global federation of distributed energy industry participants pursuing open information standards for plug and play system interoperability. Its members include inverter manufacturers, storage companies, EV and charging providers, utilities, grid operators, developers, and installers.

Its best known work is SunSpec Modbus, which defines common parameters for monitoring and controlling distributed energy resources, covering voltage regulation, power factor adjustment, and power export limiting. The Alliance also maintains DER cybersecurity certifications and frameworks, IEEE 2030.5 conformance profiles, and grid integration specifications spanning residential through utility scale.

How it gets used on a real project

Asset management lives or dies on data, and data problems are usually integration problems. When a monitoring platform cannot read a new inverter model, when two devices report the same quantity differently, or when a utility requires a specific communication profile for export control, SunSpec is the standards layer where that gets resolved. For anyone specifying equipment, asking whether a device is SunSpec certified is a short question that prevents a long commissioning problem.
