Finance is the work of structuring the capital that funds a project and evaluating whether it creates value. Finance professionals build economic models, arrange debt and equity, monetize incentives, and lead the diligence and negotiations that bring a project to financial close.
Project economics combine expected energy production, revenue, operating and capital costs, incentives, and financing into return metrics such as internal rate of return and net present value. These metrics determine whether a project is worth building and on what terms.
Projects are typically financed with a combination of debt, tax equity, and sponsor equity, and the mix evolves across development, construction, and operations. The right structure depends on the project's risk profile, contracts, and the incentives available.
Federal investment and production tax credits, along with state programs, materially improve project returns. Because many developers cannot fully use the credits themselves, they often bring in tax equity investors or transfer credits to monetize their value.
Bankability reflects how confident lenders and investors are that a project will perform and repay capital. Strong, well-allocated contracts, a creditworthy offtaker, sound engineering, and clean diligence all increase bankability.
Projects are usually held in a special purpose entity, a dedicated legal company that isolates the project's assets and liabilities. This structure simplifies financing, limits risk, and makes it easier to sell or refinance the project.
A background in finance, accounting, or economics helps, but strong modeling skills, attention to detail, and an understanding of project structure matter most. Many professionals build expertise through hands-on transaction experience.
Paths range from Financial Analyst to Finance Manager, Director of Finance, and CFO, as well as specialized roles in structuring, tax equity, and investment. As capital flows into the sector, skilled finance professionals remain in high demand.
