Electric Power Monthly is EIA’s monthly report on the U.S. electricity sector. It runs to eight chapters: net generation by source, state, and sector; fossil fuel consumption; fossil fuel stocks; fuel receipts and costs; sales, revenue, and average price; capacity additions, retirements, and capacity factors; imports and exports with Canada and Mexico; and Puerto Rico. Appendices cover methodology and technical notes, and every table is downloadable in Excel.
Publication is monthly on roughly a two month lag. Data for June 2026 was released on 26 August 2026, with the next release scheduled for 24 September 2026.
How it gets used on a real project
Electric Power Monthly is where you go for the defensible number rather than the fast one. Average retail rate by state and sector, actual capacity factors by technology, how much capacity of each type came online last month: these are the figures that anchor a market analysis, a C&I savings calculation, or a slide that will be challenged. Because it is Excel, it is also straightforward to pull into your own tracking.
